The Fix’s Philip Bump created this fascinating chart showing how much of your life the U.S. has been at war. The left-hand side of the chart shows the percentage of the American population that was born in a given year in blue, while the right-hand side shows the amount of time that an American of that age would have seen the country at war.
For Baby Boomers — the blue bulge that appears after 1945 — America has been at war for over 40 percent of their lives. The percentage drops to a low for Americans born in 1974, who have seen the country at war for only 38.1 percent of their lives. But then it quickly rises again.
Amazingly, for those born after 2001, America has been at war their entire existence. For anyone born after 1984, America has been at war for half of their lives.
